Kyle explains the seriousness of diabetes - something he thinks many people don't understand

Kyle also hopes for greater public awareness and understanding of the disease. He believes that many people underestimate the seriousness of diabetes.

"It's tough, when your kid is only one or two years old, and you have to predict what she will eat in a day and how much activity she will have. And those first few scares when your child goes really low, and you've got your finger stuck in their mouth with honey in it, with a phone in your hand ready to call 911, and suddenly - they come back."

He remembers being at the airport once, not being prepared, she was going low, " I did the O.J. Simpson dash through the airport to get food and juice, and got barricaded in security, and when I got back she was in bad shape."

She has been on the pump for a year, and Kyle says it is much better for a child, but it does not eliminate concerns for the parent of a diabetic child.

"I usually check her in the middle of the night, and occasionally she's 'in the basement' at one or two in the morning, and I think if I had slept through that…what would have happened?"

"Like other parents of Type One children, I am weary of living with the fear that my child may not wake up one morning."
