A Call to Greatness

All of us with diabetes have at one time or another wondered, "Why me?"

Some feel guilt. Some feel punishment. Some feel shame. Some live in denial. And then there are those who feel special - like we've been especially chosen to take on something extra. Or grateful - because we've been given a wake-up call to live our lives consciously. I believe that how each of us answers that key question of "Why me?" determines the quality of our lives and our ability to cope with diabetes.

Have you ever noticed that our greatest heroes in society are those who have had to overcome some enormous obstacle or handicap? Or how much do we all love an underdog who dares to pursue something extraordinary against the odds? We love these stories because it reminds us of what's possible for ourselves. There is no limit to the power & resiliency of the human spirit!

Rick Hansen said that if he had to go back and do the past over again, he wouldn't take back the car accident during his youth that paralyzed him for life. He would otherwise never have discovered what he was capable of doing or becoming.

We first knew Christopher Reeve as a handsome actor who played "Superman," but his greatest influence came from who he was and what he took on as a cause for his life AFTER his horse-back riding accident. Think about that.

With diabetes, we have a chronic illness that is frustrating and challenging to manage, and a relentless predator on our health and vitality. No question, it is HARD.

But at the same time, it is a battle we can WIN. And that battle is fought and won 'in the trenches' each and every day...

  • Managing your attitude.
  • Exercising daily.
  • Fueling your body with nutritious foods.
  • Empowering yourself with knowledge about this disease and the various tools and medications available.
  • Speaking out and educating others.
  • Giving your time and energy to volunteer and make a difference in your community.

THAT, my friends, is greatness!

There are no victims here - only people with potential.

Are you seizing yours?
